Overview

Thong Kee Restaurant, nestled on Sukhumvit Road in Bangkok’s vibrant Khlong Toei district, is a venerable institution of authentic Chinese cuisine. Established over a century ago, this family-run eatery exudes a quiet charm, blending history with a genuine culinary experience that draws both locals and discerning travelers alike.

The restaurant’s atmosphere is unpretentious yet warm, offering a calm respite from the city’s bustling energy. With a modest, no-frills interior, the focus clearly lies in the food. Diners range from families sharing convivial meals to couples savoring the rich flavors of time-honored recipes. The ambiance is one of respectful appreciation—where conversation takes a backseat to enjoying each dish’s delicate balance of taste and texture.

Thong Kee’s menu shines with classic Chinese staples that capture the essence of its heritage. Signature dishes such as Steamed Shrimp Dumplings and Fried Rice with Salty Fish showcase meticulous preparation and freshness. The Fried Pork with Basil Leaves paired with Plain Rice delivers a fragrant, comforting blend of savory and herbal notes. Vegetables receive equal care; the Stir-Fried Morning Glory in Oyster Sauce and Fried Kai Lan with Crispy Pork are simple yet deeply satisfying greens that complement the richer mains.

Seafood lovers will appreciate delicately prepared offerings like the steamed bass adorned with sweet and chili garlic sauce, perfectly balanced to enhance without overpowering the fish’s freshness. The Egg Noodle with Roasted Duck and Prawn Vermicelli also exemplify the kitchen’s skill in marrying textures and flavors harmoniously.

Beverages such as the traditional chrysanthemum tea and refreshing lemonade provide a cooling counterpart to the bold, savory dishes and Bangkok’s tropical heat. The locally beloved coconut juice offers a subtly sweet palate cleanser, elevating the overall dining experience.

Service here strikes a fine balance of attentiveness without intrusion, allowing patrons to feel cared for yet unhurried. Regular guests receive personalized touches, from favorite seating spots to bespoke drink refills, underscoring the restaurant’s familial, welcoming nature. This approach fosters a sense of community, inviting patrons not only to taste but to belong.

Thong Kee’s location on Sukhumvit Road makes it accessible to a broad audience—tourists in search of authentic Cantonese fare and locals appreciating the preservation of traditional recipes handed down through generations. Its understated presence belies the depth of culinary heritage within, making it a hidden gem for those who value substance over flash.

Overall, Thong Kee offers a richly textured experience rooted in authenticity, quality, and warmth. It is a place where heritage lives on in every dish, inviting guests to savor the true soul of Chinese cooking in the heart of Bangkok.

Thong Kee has been around since 1875, should give you a clue as to its authenticity. At the entrance there is a warm welcome. I chose my seating to savour the atmosphere. Families, couples, mainly Chinese and Thai origin with the odd knowing farang. The place has a calm to it you only get in top end restaurants where the food is super delicious, because everyone is too busy eating to talk. I was recommended the coconut juice, great choice. I ordered Peking duck, steamed rice and steamed bass with sweet and chilli garlic sauce. The timing of the dishes was on point. The care from the waiter attentive but not overly so. The food spoke for itself: freshly cooked, melt in your mouth comfort duck dish. Brought back memories from home and OP is a long way from home. The fish was freshly and perfectly cooked tender but not over cooked , dripping in a balanced sweet but no nonsense chilli infusion. Again melt in your mouth affair. All in all outstanding I order all AutoBots wherever you may be, to make your way to Thong Kee…peace out

Was wandering around the streets near my hotel in Sukhumvit when I stumbled upon a modest little spot — ท่องกี่ภัตตาคาร-Thong Kee Restaurant. A humble shopfront with a no-frills setup, yet this family-run place has been around since 1872, passed down through three generations! Ordered their roast duck and crispy pork rice — the kind that hits with that perfect balance of smoky, savory crunch — along with a fish maw and crab meat soup that was rich, silky, and comforting. Washed it all down with an ice-cold fizzy lemonade that cut through Bangkok’s heat like a small miracle. Whenever I travel, I try to eat where the locals eat — because that’s where you find the soul of the city.

It was quiet in the morning, which made for a nice, relaxed atmosphere. We were served chrysanthemum tea — seems like it’s a common welcome drink everywhere you eat in Bangkok. We had some dim sum, which was quite decent.

Words cannot do this place justice. The service, ambiance, flavor, prices, and items available for purchase, proximity to other places makes this a hidden gem! I first dined at this restaurant with some members of my group, and between the THREE of us who each enjoyed appetizers, main dishes, and drinks, we were charged 710 baht which totaled up to 20 usd~. The second time that I visited, I was alone and they remembered me! I was given the royal treatment: they gave me a cozy spot, refilled my drink from my bottle-not water from a pitcher, my personal bottle. Be advised that if you eat here alone, there is a minimum required for a bank card. So if you need to buy something else, just buy something from their shelves right behind the register.

Ordered delivery. The fried egg noodles with chicken in thick sauce was good. Bbq was good. Fresh spring rolls were so so.
